No Child Left Behind (Bronx Calling) is a series of paper sculptures extracted from the popular first-person-shooter video game Halo. The title of the piece refers to the No Child Left Behind act and its politics of enforcing ‘higher standards’ in public education, while ignoring the economic forces involved in student achievement. The act also concealed a clause that required schools receiving funding from NCLB to provide military recruiters with contact information on all students entering their senior year in high school. The piece speaks about how both education and entertainment are utilized to militarize and influence how young men and women learn to imagine their own place in society, both as a student, a gamer and (in the future) possibly a soldier.
